Pacific Bell PCS is by far the worsed company to deal with in my experience as a consumer. Not only are their products often defective as exemplified by my Motorola Star Tac 8000 that was returned and replaced five times, but their overall signal in Los Angeles is terrible. I am unable to receive calls in my home, at work, nor on campus because of their weak signal. As a result, I miss calls regularly, and basically use my phone as a pager, checking messages and voice mail. Overall, I suggest steering clear of Pac Bell PCS and I plan to switch services soon. Any suggestions?

I'm saddened by your bad dealings with Pac Bell PCS. I definately think you should go with Nextel. I must say I am very satisfied with my phone/two-way radio, and the service I receive from them. Nextel, has the most cell sites in So. Cali (428 or so) compared to Sprint or Pac Bell, who barely have 100. Nextel's prices aren't as cheap as the rest...but hey, you get what you pay for.

Hanasab-
I actually use AT&T, as I found their prices to be very competitive. In my opinion AT&T is the best because you get more bang for your buck so to speak. They have plans where you have 250 anytime minutes/500 night weekend for $30.00 US, all the way up to 3000 min. for $200. They also throw in voicemail, called id, call waiting, call forwarding, and finally text messaging for free so you can get rid of your pager. As an added bonus you get free unlimited wireless web access, who can beat that? Their coverage maps are much better than sprint, pac bell, but not sure about Nextel. Hope this helps |

smizrahie,
you have a valid point about pricing, but for quality of service and clarity of calls, Nextel cannot be beat. It is a fact that Nextel has by far the most cell sites in the southern california area. More cell cites equal less lost calls, and better reception where no other cell phones have it.

Pacific Bell Wireless RIPS People OFF! I made the mistake of purchasing a 2-year contract with the lice, since it offered free Ericsson PHONES. The phones cut out even when we are not traveling, and either the service itself is bad or the phone, as I have so much trouble making a bloody call that I frankly don't use them anymore. We are stuck (according to PC Wireless in this 2 year contract which won't end for another year). Thank you for letting me air this complaint, don't bother getting a service contract (or any contract for that matter) as it will cause you grief when you attempt to use the SERVICE! Greg |

Incidentally, here is their email address and if you can make any sense of why they offer contracts with phones that don't work, maybe you could let me in on it:

I was a consumer PacBell, and I as well had grown tired of dropped calls as well as general poor reception around Los Angeles. I did cancel my service with them and am now with SprintPCS. Although the customer service is not much better (although you can check you account online), the service quality is 10 times better. Also, I am still waiting for the balance on my deposit from PacBell. I have waited over 5 months with no check in site. I am considering writing to the California Public Utilities Commission and issuing a complaint. I would also suggest the same to anyone having similar problems. Todd |

Point.com had some helpfull suggestions that anyone experiencing the same problems might pursue to wit:
Greg, You may wish to visit the Enforcement Division of the Federal Communications Commission site at: http://www.fcc.gov/ccb/enforce/index-complaints.html. This site has consumer advice and also allows you to file a complaint. You may also wish to visit the Wireless Consumers Alliance at http://www.wirelessconsumers.org/. This site has many suggestions as how to deal with complaints about wireless carriers and services. I have filed a complaint with FCC, though I am not going to hold my breath in anxious anticipation of any outcome. |
